Historic Building Refresh

A 96-year-old Lancashire community and entertainment venue is on course for full refurbishment after the completion of the first stage in its renovation.

Originally built in 1921, Lowther Pavilion is set in Lowther Gardens in Lytham St Annes and is a venue for theatrical productions, concerts, exhibitions, wedding receptions and community events. The first of a three-phase plan in the £5.25 million renovation project began in 2016 and was completed in 2017 with the completion of the new roof.

Euroclad’s products provided enhanced thermal performance and recreated the shape of the building’s original roof, which had remained intact since its construction in 1921. Improving the thermal performance of the roof was essential to this project so the existing roof was over-clad with a Refresh System featuring the Vieo warm roof; achieving the desired 0.11W/m2K U-Value, a highly thermally-efficient solution.

Refresh Systems offer a package of over-clad roof and wall refurbishment systems that can be adapted to suit various existing construction types and achieve a variety of defined performances.

The roof featured the Vieo roof profile in organic patina coated aluminium, which provided a weathered aluminium finish. The adaptability of the Vieo profile also allowed the specialist installers to remove a dip that existed in the original roof and achieve the look of a traditional pitched roof. As well as the new roof the first phase also included the relaying of the building’s original maple floor, construction of concrete supporting walls and the installation of new tiered seating in the auditorium.

Sean Boylan from AMS Cladding, who installed the roof, said: “Having worked with Euroclad before, we know and trust its products and the team were able to provide us with the most cost-effective option for this project. Its Vieo roof system and profile were quick and easy to install,  and the flexibility of Vieo allowed us to resolve the dip in the original roof, which was causing a significant difference in height. Euroclad was also able to provide the system guarantee which was required on this project.”

Funded by grants from Fylde Council, private donations and the Love Lowther renovation appeal – which is still actively raising funds – the refurbishment of Lowther Pavilion is set to be completed in time for the venue’s centenary in 2021. The project, which is being led by Andy Wolfe of architects Creative SPARC, has also been guided by feedback from public consultation events.

Euroclad’s diverse range of steel and aluminium cladding systems are available in a choice of options and colours. Founded in 1981, Euroclad has maintained its cutting edge approach to high performance, cost-effective solutions to remain at the forefront of the industry for over 35 years.

Vieo has been installed to finish an exciting new primary school in Cambridge.  Trumpington Meadows Primary School is a state school for boys and girls aged from 4 to 11 which features 2,600m2 of Vieo roof manufactured using the VieoZinc material; an aluminium substrate with a zinc-rich coating that looks and weathers the same as zinc but at a fraction of the price.  It wasn’t just the great looks of the Vieo roof that secured its specification but also its performance. Vieo can be installed as a warm or cold roof but in this instance it features an excellent 0.15W/m2K U-Value.  The thermally efficient roof was installed by specialist contractor TR Freeman, working for principal contractor Willmott Dixon.  Matching flashings and feature details were also manufactured by us.

The new school for the Trumpington Meadows development moved to its new permanent premises in 2013 opening its doors to 420 pupils on 4th September this year.  It has fully integrated facilities including Community and Early Years provision.

Trumpington Meadows has an exciting creative curriculum, the aim of which is to enable children to become independent thinkers, who have high self-esteem and confidence in their own skills.   We are proud to be able to contribute to such noble objectives and hope that the learning environment our products have helped to shape is conducive to such goals.

For Coffee Lovers

Nobody loves a cup of coffee more than us; and it was a pleasure to be associated with the nation’s favourite coffee shop when Vieo was chosen for the dramatic roof and walls of Costa Coffee’s latest store.  Despite a challenging build MA Witcombe successfully installed the Vieo sheets on behalf of PDR Construction, and the commitment shown by all those involved resulted in a great-looking building.  The Vieo roof and walls were manufactured from Anthracite-coloured Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra and this was the first Costa Coffee store that we’ve supplied.

Costa’s mission has always been to save the world from mediocre coffee. Back in 1971 most people thought this was a noble yet hopelessly unachievable task. But every cup of our Mocha Italia blend created since then has helped in their quest. With this latest coffee shop they are another step closer to a world where bland, average coffee, as well as bland, average store design, is consigned to history.

Gateway to the East

Vieo is proving itself popular for a range of housing applications, most recently at the Eastern Gateway scheme in West Bromwich where it has been used to great effect on the roof and walls, with integrated solar panels and matching fabrications and flashings.

Located in West Bromwich town centre, the project is a mixed-use development which will provide the town with high quality affordable homes, office space and retail units. The £20 million project is a partnership between Sandwell Council, Accord Group and the Homes and Communities Agency and will transform the site into a thriving and attractive modern residential and commercial space.

Miller Industrial Cladding Ltd installed the specialist roof and wall cladding and were appointed by main contractor Mansell Midlands Limited.  Christian Collett, Commercial Director at Miller Industrial Cladding Ltd commented: “Vieo is a new and exciting product for housing applications and it lends itself really well to modern house construction.  The versatility of the materials and profiles means that it can be used to create an interesting design feature on the roof and walls that provides a modern finish without being faddy.  It’s also quick and simple to install and the support and service from Euroclad made the entire process expedient and straightforward.”

Vieo is one of the most exciting products we’ve launched in recent years and with its attractive flat-pan profile, subtle folded-seam, hidden fixings, and design flexibility, it’s little wonder that some of the most attractive projects of recent times have featured this charming, cost-effective and convenient product.

One of the more striking projects completed last year was Myplace, The Oracle, Blackpool; evidenced by the awards and nominations it has received:

• Winner of North West LABC Community Building of the Year 2012
• Shortlisted for the UK LABC Community Building of the Year 2012
• Winner of the Blackpool Civic Trust New Build of the Year 2012
• Shortlisted for North West RICS Awards 2013, Community Benefit Category
COMPLIMENTS AND AWARDS (winners announced May)

The project architect Matthew Hill of Blackpool Council commented: “Vieo was chosen for its modern take on an established construction system.  The flexibility of the product is showcased by the curve forms and vibrant colour featured on Myplace The Oracle; setting a bright, energetic tone.  The Oracle aims to deliver world class youth facilities driven by the active participation of young people. Young people were consulted throughout all stages of the project, with a Young Persons advisory group appointed to inform design team decision making. The advisory group worked with the design team and Euroclad in developing a successful, visually striking, yet functional envelope.”

Metal Theft On The Increase

Metal theft is estimated to cost at least £700 million a year to the UK economy and hundreds of properties are becoming targets to thieves who see the rising price of metals such as lead and zinc as an opportunity to cash in. The threat of metal robbery poses financial and structural implications for home owners and businesses, as well as community institutions such as schools, hospitals and places of worship. This can result in increased insurance premiums, large costs for repair and replacement and massive disruption to homeowners and businesses, not to mention the emotional trauma associated with being a victim of crime.

Have you or your customers have been targeted by metal thieves, do you have concerns that your property could be next on the list or are you considering a new construction or building refurbishment? If so then it would be in your interests to consider a cost effective alternative to scrap-valuable metals that delivers the same performance with a significant reduction in the risk of theft.
Vieo is a simple cost-effective alternative to traditional metal roofing which offers the aesthetic and charm of time-honoured materials like lead or zinc.
