Energy from Waste

In December there was a visit by 25 international architects from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to the impressive Viridor Ardley Energy Recovery Centre just outside Oxford. The facility, which was built in 2014, is made up of many different elements and uses the following products:

  • The process building roof used Euroclad’s Elite System 4, an insulated roof with the Euroseam® external profile and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel by Tata Steel for the internal liner in White
  • For the walls of the process building, Elite Systems were installed featuring Colorcoat Prisma® pre-finished steel on the outside of the building and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® for the internal face
  • The administration building features Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in Straw, whilst the Bottom Ash area uses the Euroclad sinusoidal profile manufactured from double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in Goosewing Grey

The ERF will treat 300,000 tonnes of waste per year – sufficient to treat all of Oxfordshire’s residual municipal waste. This means at least 95% of Oxfordshire’s residual municipal waste can be diverted away from landfill. Impressively, this can generate enough electricity for about 38,000 homes.

As well as treating household waste the facility receives residual waste from local businesses and other local authorities helping them to divert their waste away from landfill.

Viridor’s Ardley Energy Recovery Facility Visitor Centre recently won the Waste and Resource Learning & Development Award with Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) for information programmes and activities tailored to a wide range of visitors, from school groups to international government officials.
