And continuing the sporting theme is Ravenscraig Sports Centre near Motherwell, which features an array of interesting cladding features, such as an erupting roofline and diagonally-laid trapezoidal cladding.  Also featured prominently is Euroclad’s sinusoidal cladding, which has helped the unique sports centre become an attractive and familiar part of the Lanarkshire landscape.

Euroclad supplied 22,000m2 of wall cladding, which formed a thermally efficient envelope around the sports centre.  There are many factors that need to be balanced when designing and constructing an architecturally striking leisure facility that must also meet the very practical requirements of a sports venue. At Ravenscraig those objectives were achieved by specifying systems and products that create an arresting and unique building whilst taking into consideration practical requirements such as durability and cost.

A great example of installed sinusoidal profile can be seen at Glamorgan Sport Park. Corrugated profiles used to be synonymous with sheds and old industrial buildings. With the move towards trapezoidal profiles the undulating curves of sinusoidal roofing and cladding fell out of favour. But recent years have seen resurgence in their use, often with great visual effect as part of a modern building envelope. The new £3.7m state-of-the-art coaching and performance development Centre at Glamorgan Sport Park, Wales, is one such building that takes full advantage of this attractive cladding option in Silver Colorcoat Prisma®. It is also the first sports centre in the UK to receive a BREEAM excellent rating for its facilities.

Glamorgan Sport Park is the home of outdoor sports students at Glamorgan University. The site covers an impressive 30 acres, which includes indoor and outdoor facilities that are regularly used by professional teams, including Cardiff City FC, Cardiff Blues Rugby Academies and the Welsh Rugby Union as part of their elite coach education programme. It has also been used by various professional teams including the British and Irish Lions and the Australian, New Zealand and South African national rugby teams.

The Government Construction Strategy was published by the Cabinet office on 31 May 2011. The report announced the Government’s intention to require collaborative 3D BIM Level 2 (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) on its projects by 2016. We are way ahead of the curve with our BIM models and will be fully Level 2 BIM ready by the middle of 2014, two years ahead of the government’s target.  And if you need BIM files now don’t worry; speak to our technical department and we can help you with the digital information you need.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude commented: “This Government’s four year strategy for BIM implementation will change the dynamics and behaviours of the construction supply chain, unlocking new, more efficient and collaborative ways of working.  This whole sector adoption of BIM will put us at the vanguard of a new digital construction era and position the UK to become the world leaders in BIM.”

A lofty ambition by the government but one that we share; borne out by our commitment to lead the metal roofing and cladding industry with yet another element of our products and service.
